GEORGE THOMAS HOLLINGSWORTH (1887 - 1954)
George was born on a farm three miles S.E.. of Lynn, Indiana, the son
of John and Lydia Ann Peele Hollingsworth. He grew up doing much of the
farming while his older brother, Isaac, cleared the land. He acquired the
equivalent of a grade school education and attended near by Quaker Lynn
Church. He had dark hair and a lighter mustache, his eyes were deep blue,
an inherent trait of the Hollingsworth's.
he also was left handed. At the age of 25, he married Evie Lewis , daughter
of George and Emily Cadwallader Lewis and set up housekeeping in a log
cabin on the farm of his father-in-law northeast of Lynn. Here he farmed
his father-in-law's farm on shares for the next 8 years.
Then in the winter of 1901, he bought a small farm of 20 acres and became a
landowner. He bought and sold a succession of larger farms improving each
and selling for a profit. At an early age (approx.55) he went into semi-
retirement to a home in Lynn, Indiana, but continued buying, improving and
selling farms. From then on, he and his wife usually spent their winters in
Florida. His second son, Ralph, a carpenter and a bachelor helped on
improving the farms, and also he did their driving in their old age. They
bought their first automobile, a Model T Ford in 1920. In 1935, at he age
of 68, he bought his last farm, 122 acres near his birthplace, which he
called the "Old Home Place", and kept it the rest of his life. He rented it
to his nephew Fred Hollingsworth. It was located about 4 miles south of
Lynn, Indiana and 1 mile east of US 27 on the Hopewell Road.
He was a gentle, mild mannered man with a great sense of humor. His
sons respected and obeyed him, but could make him the bunt of a practical
joke to his great enjoyment.Children of George Hollingsworth and Evie Lewis are:
